As parents and caregivers, you want the best for your children. If your child has a frontal lisp, you may have concerns about their speech and communication abilities, particularly their articulation. Luckily, there are exercises and techniques available to help improve your child's speech. In this article, we will explore the benefits of frontal lisp exercises and how they can help your child communicate effectively.
What is a Frontal Lisp?
A frontal lisp is a type of articulation error that occurs when a person produces the "s" and "z" sounds with their tongue protruding between their teeth. This can cause speech to sound like a “th” sound. A frontal lisp is often seen in children but can persist into adulthood if not treated.
Importance of Speech Therapy for Frontal Lisp
A frontal lisp can cause difficulty in communicating effectively, which can have a negative impact on a person's social, academic, and professional life. Speech therapy for frontal lisps is crucial for individuals who want to improve their speech and communication abilities.
Speech therapy not only helps to improve speech production and articulation but also helps individuals develop the skills necessary to communicate effectively in different social situations. Through speech therapy, individuals can improve their self-confidence and quality of life.
At Chit Chat Speech Therapy, we are committed to helping our clients achieve their goals and overcome their communication challenges. Our speech-language pathologists have extensive experience working with individuals of all ages and backgrounds and are dedicated to providing personalized care and support.
Understanding Frontal Lisp Exercises
Speech therapy exercises can help individuals with a frontal lisp improve their speech by correcting the placement of articulators in the mouth in order to produce the sound correctly. These exercises are designed to target specific areas of the mouth and help train the tongue to move correctly during speech.
There are two ways to produce the /s/ sound correctly; by placing the tongue tip up behind the top teeth, or by pointing the tongue tip down behind the bottom teeth. The difference between the /s/ and /th/sounds is the /s/ is produced by pushing airflow in through the center of the mouth with the top and bottom rows of front teeth together and the tongue behind the teeth; whereas the /th/ sound is produced by pushing air through the center of the mouth with the tongue protruding between the top and bottom rows of teeth.
Frontal Lisp Exercises for Speech Therapy in Minnesota
At Chit Chat Speech Therapy, our speech-language pathologists specialize in treating individuals with speech and language disorders, including frontal lisps. We provide customized treatment plans tailored to each individual's unique needs and goals.
Our frontal lisp exercises focus on correcting the tongue and jaw placement in small increments at a time. We create a positive environment so your child feels successful, yet challenged in order to continue their motivation and progress. We find out where their tongue is going when they're producing it wrong. Then we'll try to see if they can produce any airflow naturally with their front teeth together. If not, we'll test having them put their tongue behind their top front teeth, and then behind their bottom front teeth. Whichever correction produces the most naturally sounding /s/ with the least amount of effort is the route we'll take. Then we'll learn how they take corrections to find out the pace of therapy until we can increase the pace by correcting them more often if they're a little more sensitive to corrections. You'll see us working our way through the levels of development (sound in isolation ⇒ sound in a syllable ⇒ sound in a single word ⇒ sound in a phrase ⇒ sound in a sentence ⇒ sound in reading ⇒ sound in conversation). First, we'll learn how (i.e where) your child is making the mistake, then we'll try different placement strategies and find out which one is the easiest correction for your child. We work at your child's pace so they'll be excited to see us and practice their sound correctly!
