What is Augmentative Communication?
Augmentative/Alternative communication (AAC) is an alternate form of communication that facilitates communication in individuals who are non-verbal or have difficulty using verbal communication. There are many different augmentative communication devices and systems that can be used, and the specific device or system that is chosen will depend on the individual's needs and preferences. One common type of augmentative communication device is a speech-generating device, which can be programmed to produce pre-recorded or synthesized speech. An iPad can also be a speech-generating device when used with the right apps. Other augmentative communication devices include sign language boards, eye-gaze boards, and body-worn sensors. Augmentative communication systems can be beneficial for individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities who have difficulty communicating verbally. They can also be used in situations where verbal communication is not possible, such as in noisy environments.
Does AAC help or hinder verbal speech?
While many people think augmentative communication hinders speech, it actually HELPS verbal speech develop! Research has shown that augmentative communication does not have a negative impact on speech development or production. In fact, augmentative communication can actually support the development of speech skills in individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities who are non-verbal or have limited verbal skills. Augmentative communication provides a visual support system that can help individuals with autism communicate their wants, needs, and thoughts. Additionally, augmentative communication can help to increase the frequency and accuracy of speech productions in individuals with autism. Therefore, augmentative communication should not be discouraged as it can actually support the development and production of speech skills in individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities.
How do I know if AAC is right for my child?
Many parents of children with autism or other developmental disorders ask whether augmentative communication is right for their child. While there is no easy answer, there are some key points to consider. First, does your child have difficulty communicating his or her needs? Is your child non-verbal, or does he or she have difficulty using speech? If so, augmentative communication may help to reduce frustration and improve communication. Second, does your child have difficulty understanding spoken language? If so, augmentative communication may provide a way for your child to access information through visual means. Finally, it is important to consult with a speech therapist to get a professional opinion on augmentative communication. With these factors in mind, you can make an informed decision on whether augmentative communication is right for your child.
How will I know how to help my child use AAC?
Here at Chit Chat Speech Therapy, we coach you on how to use AAC with your child. AAC is a very involved area of communication and there are many factors that go into the decision to start it and how to use it. Every child is different, so we customize AAC use to your child. We will show you strategies to teach words, how to best model AAC so they see you using it as well, and we talk with you and take into consideration what you want your child to communicate and use their skills to make progress!
How long does speech therapy take?
There is no set time limit on how long speech therapy is needed. It all depends on the child's needs and abilities. Let's be honest, AAC is a long process, so depending on your child's abilities and how often you are using it you can expect AAC to likely take longer than traditional speech therapy. Speech therapy always has more progress the more the family is involved and is working with the child when the therapist is not present. That's why Chit Chat Speech Therapy does parent training, so YOU can learn how to help your child too!
